NEW YORK / RankWire.AI / – Wall Street stocks finished higher Wednesday as major U.S. indexes recovered from three consecutive sessions of losses. The Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed 295.01 points, or 0.56%, to 53,061.89. The S&P 500 gained 35.16 points, or 0.46%, to close at 7,666.63. The Nasdaq Composite advanced 118.05 points, or 0.45%, ending at 26,217.83. The gains marked a broad rebound after several sessions of pressure across U.S. equity markets.

Technology and semiconductor shares help drive a broad rebound across major US stock indexes.

Semiconductor stocks helped lift the technology sector during the session. Nvidia gained 3.2%, Micron Technology rose 2.4% and Qualcomm added 2.0%. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index also moved higher after recent weakness. Small-cap shares performed even better, with the Russell 2000 rising 1.1%. Market breadth improved across both major exchanges. Advancing shares outnumbered declining stocks on the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq, showing gains extended beyond the largest technology companies.

Several individual stocks also posted notable moves as investors reviewed company updates and quarterly results. Dell Technologies surged 15.8% after raising its annual revenue and profit forecasts. Brown-Forman gained 3.9% after reporting quarterly profit above expectations. Uber Technologies advanced 1.6% after announcing plans to reduce its workforce by about 10%. Materials led percentage gains among the S&P 500’s 11 major sectors. Real estate finished as the only major sector in negative territory.

Technology and small caps support gains

U.S. Treasury yields eased from recent highs as equity markets moved higher. The benchmark 10-year Treasury yield slipped to about 4.79% after reaching 4.818% earlier Wednesday. Rising government bond yields had weighed on stocks during the previous sessions. Investors also tracked higher energy prices and broader inflation indicators. Brent crude settled 1% higher at $95.63 a barrel. U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude rose 0.9% to settle at $91.01 a barrel.

Fresh labor market data also shaped trading during the session. ADP reported that U.S. private employers added 38,000 jobs in August, the weakest monthly increase since January. The July gain was revised upward to 46,000 jobs. Manufacturing employment fell by 17,000, while professional and business services lost 16,000 positions. Education and health services added 45,000 jobs. The figures provided another measure of employment conditions ahead of additional federal labor data scheduled for release.

Treasury yields and employment data draw attention

The Federal Reserve remained a major focus as markets assessed economic conditions before its September policy meeting. Investors monitored employment figures, inflation measures and Treasury yields for evidence on current financial conditions. The central bank’s latest Beige Book also provided a district-by-district assessment of economic activity. The Federal Reserve gathered information for that report through Aug. 24. Wednesday’s decline in the 10-year Treasury yield offered some relief after the recent rise in borrowing costs.

Trading statistics showed the rebound reached a wide range of stocks by the closing bell. Advancers led decliners by a 1.78-to-1 ratio on the New York Stock Exchange. Nasdaq recorded 3,102 advancing stocks and 1,679 decliners. The S&P 500 posted 12 new 52-week highs and 10 new lows. Nasdaq recorded 58 new highs and 135 new lows. Despite Wednesday’s advance, the major U.S. stock indexes remained below their levels at the beginning of the week.
